DIY Felt Primrose Tutorial: Create realistic spring flowers

🌸 PURCHASE THE PRINTABLE PRIMROSE TEMPLATES IN MY ETSY SHOP

Spring has officially arrived in my studio, bringing sunnier, longer days that are perfect for crafting. The natural light at my crafting table makes it so much easier to pick out the perfect wool-blend felt colours, and today, I’m sharing a project that celebrates one of the UK’s most-loved springtime blooms: the Felt Primrose.

How to make felt primroses

Why make felt Primroses?

If you are looking for easy felt flower tutorials, the primrose is a fantastic place to start. Unlike complex garden roses, the primrose has a simple, architectural beauty that is very beginner-friendly. Whether you are a seasoned felt florist or a hobbyist looking for spring craft ideas, these little pastel blooms are a joy to put together.

In this video, I demonstrate the simple assembly techniques to make your own felt primroses.

The 'All That Blossoms' Spring Wreath

While a single stem looks lovely in a bud vase, these primroses were originally designed as a key component of my All That Blossoms Wreath.

This project started life as a community Makealong and has since become one of my bestselling felt flower craft kits. It celebrates the best of the season by combining:

  • Felt Primroses (in classic cream, yellow and pink)
  • Delicate spring blossoms and buds
  • Beautiful lavender stems
  • Detailed felt ranunculus

If you want to create a piece of permanent spring home decor, you can find the full wreath kit in my shop and the PDF pattern in my Etsy pattern shop.

Materials needed for your DIY Primrose

To get the most realistic result for your handmade flowers, I recommend using high-quality materials:

  • Wool-blend felt: I used the shades Straw, Mellow Yellow and Pistachio for the flowers featured in the video.
  • Florist wire: Opt for 18 or 19 gauge wires if you're making stems to display in a bouquet or vase (wrap them in florist tape for a natural finish), or 22 gauge to use on a wreath.
  • 1cm felt balls

The templates: You can find my printable felt primrose PDF templates as part of the full All That Blossoms Wreath tutorial. The digital download includes everything you need: a precise materials list, my favourite colour palettes, and templates for hand-cutting or for printing on freezer paper - plus SVG and DXF digital files which have been tried and tested for effortless cutting with machines like the Cricut Maker.
