It's the final day of #SixDaysOfFeltScraps and following on from yesterday's flower box frame, I'm using up more of those small offcuts of felt to make this sweet and simple striped heart brooch.
I've used scalloped-edged and pinking shears to get the decorative effect on some of my stripes, but don't let that put you off if you don't have these - you can still get a gorgeous striped effect with plain strips of felt.
Feeling inspired by today's project? Why not pick up a box (or two!) of felt scraps to get you on your way to making this and the other projects in my notebook series? My special multi-buy offer on felt scraps project boxes is running throughout November and December - they are in limited supply so be quick!
Striped Heart Brooch
TOOLS AND MATERIALS:
- Felt scraps in various colours - you'll need two pieces large enough for the base shape of your brooch, the rest can be smaller strips
- Brooch pin
- Card/paper for cutting your template
- Decorative edged scissors such as scalloped-edged or pinking shears (optional - you can still get a lovely effect without them)
- Tacky glue
- Glue gun
TO MAKE YOUR STRIPED HEART BROOCH:
Start by choosing a shape for your brooch and cutting a template for this out of paper or card: check it is big enough to cover the whole of your brooch pin.
Now cut a piece of felt large enough for the size of your brooch shape. If you want the stripes on your brooch to lay at an angle, bear this in mind when you are checking the size.
Use scissors and/or decorative edged scissors to cut strips of felt in different colours: you can vary the width of these (mine were around 5-8mm wide), but check that they are long enough to cover the piece of felt you have cut for your base shape.
Cover the surface of your base piece of felt with tacky glue, then stick on the strips of felt. Leave to dry.
Use your template to cut out a piece of felt in the shape you've chosen for your brooch.
Turn over the stripey felt piece you've assembled and use a glue gun to attach the plain felt shape to this - remember to position it an angle if you want the stripes to lay in a particular direction.
Carefully cut around the base shape with a sharp pair of scissors. If you find that any of the felt strips have lifted, use a toothpick or similar to dab on some glue and seal down the edges.
Use a glue gun to attach your brooch pin to the back of the brooch. Leave to dry completely before wearing!
And that's a wrap! I hope you've enjoyed all my project ideas and inspiration over the last six days. If you've had a go at any of the projects, don't forget to share them on social media with #thehandmadefloristmakes.
